What Is Turf Toe?

Dr. Joseph Mechanik of Colorado Foot Institute can treat patients of all ages. If you or your child are an athlete or prone to foot issues, you could benefit from maintaining a great relationship with Dr. Mechanik. We have the expertise to treat turf toe and other sports injuries in children.

Turf toe

Turf toe is a term for a sprain of the largest joint in your big toe that happens when the toe is overstretched. This injury can happen from repetitive overuse or an acute incident. Turf toe gets its name from sports played on artificial turf like football. The repeated pushing off from your big toe makes turf toe a common injury in football players, runners, and other athletes.

Symptoms of turf toe include pain, swelling, and limited movement of the joint. A sprain of your big toe can be very painful but Dr. Mechanik is here to help. Come see him for an X-ray, a proper diagnosis, and begin treatment.

Treatment

When you have a turf toe, it's important to contact your doctor as soon as you notice symptoms. Treatment is focused on reducing the pain and swelling while you heal, so your doctor will likely recommend a combination of rest and low-impact activity. Like other sprains, your toe can benefit from applying the RICE method of care. This includes rest, ice, compression, and elevation. Anti-inflammatory medications could help with the pain and swelling.

If you are an athlete and want to continue being active, your podiatrist will recommend rigid orthotic inserts for your shoes to control the movement of your feet and protect the toes. Surgery is only recommended for turf toe in severe cases when the patient has not responded to other treatment and is experiencing prolonged pain.

At Colorado Foot Institute, Dr. Joseph Mechanik can diagnose and treat turf toe. Call an appointment at (303) 333-3383.
