Winter Feet Advice-by Dr. Joseph E. Mechanik

Winter is a time when people often overlook the importance of taking care of their feet and toes. Cold temperatures can lead to frostnip and frostbite, both of which can cause permanent nerve damage. Additionally, they can also lead to chilblains, which are itchy and painful lesions caused by inflammation of the small blood vessels in the skin.

Frostnip and frostbite occur when the skin and underlying tissues are exposed to cold temperatures for too long. Frostnip is a mild form of frostbite that causes the skin to become pale and numb. It is usually not permanent, but can cause pain and discomfort. Frostbite is a more serious condition that can cause the skin to become red or purple and can cause permanent nerve damage.

In order to avoid frostnip and frostbite, it is important to limit your exposure to cold temperatures. Dress in layers of loose clothing and wear mittens and warm, water-resistant footwear. Additionally, keep your hands, feet, and face dry and warm. Cover all exposed skin as completely as possible when going outside in cold weather. Keeping your home and workplace comfortably warm can also help.

Chilblains are another condition that can occur in cold weather. They are itchy and painful lesions caused by inflammation of the small blood vessels in the skin. Chilblains usually occur on the toes, fingers, and ears, but can also occur on the nose and cheeks. Treatment for chilblains includes keeping the area dry, avoiding exposure to cold, and wearing warm clothes. In some cases, topical creams or ointments may also be prescribed by a doctor.

Taking good care of your feet and toes during winter is essential to avoid frostnip, frostbite, and chilblains. Make sure to dress warmly, cover all exposed skin, and keep your home and workplace comfortably warm. Additionally, avoid smoking, as it can make you more susceptible to frostbite. If you do experience any of these conditions, be sure to see a doctor for proper treatment. By taking the proper precautions and being mindful of your feet and toes during the winter, you can help prevent these conditions and keep your feet and toes healthy.
